Illiteracy remains a major challenge for girls and young women globally. It is estimated that nearly 250 million children worldwide are not learning basic reading and math skills, and adolescent girls are disproportionately affected. Lack of education and literacy skills significantly impedes girls' access to economic and social opportunities, undermining gender equality.
In many developing nations, girls face structural barriers to gaining an education. They are often expected to shoulder domestic responsibilities from a young age which prevents school attendance. There is also a lack of accessible and girl-friendly school facilities, qualified female teachers, and societal attitudes that devalue girls' education. All of these factors increase the likelihood of adolescent girls never enrolling in school or dropping out early.
Illiterate girls grow up to become illiterate women. This entrenches gender inequities as women lack the knowledge and skills needed for economic independence, self-reliance, and full participation in community life. Research shows literacy directly correlates with increased earnings, improved health indicators for women and their children, and greater engagement in public decision making.
Compared to literate peers, illiterate girls are more vulnerable to early marriage, early pregnancy, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation. If trapped in a cycle of poverty, they often have no choice but to marry young for financial security or engage in dangerous work. Lack of literacy skills makes it difficult to access health information, services, and support.
Many illiterate girls live in fragile or crisis-affected regions which further disrupts access to education. Natural disasters, conflict, displacement, and pandemics like COVID-19 have forced hundreds of millions of girls out of school. When education systems collapse, literacy levels plummet leaving adolescent girls extremely marginalized.
Significant action and investment are required to address this crisis. Global initiatives like UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE) are helping girls and women gain basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills. But government policy must prioritize funding for female literacy programs and build more girl-friendly schools. Communities can also play a key role by challenging gender norms that devalue girls' education.
Empowering illiterate girls with literacy skills and access to education is key to unlocking their potential. It enables them to live healthier, more secure lives, gain decent work, and actively participate in their communities and societies. No girl should be left behind simply because she cannot read, write or do basic math. With concerted effort at national and grassroots levels, the barriers holding back millions of illiterate girls can be overcome.
